U.S. President Donald Trump has called for the immediate eviction and relocation of homeless individuals away from Washington, D.C., while insisting criminals should be jailed, Arab News reported quoting Reuters.

President Trump issued a directive on Sunday via his Truth Social platform, declaring: “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals… we’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”

The White House has not clarified the legal authority under which such evictions would occur, noting that the president only controls federal properties in the city.

According to data from Community Partnership, approximately 3,782 single-person individuals experience homelessness nightly in Washington, D.C., a city with a population of about 700,000. Of those, around 800 are unsheltered, living on the streets.

At the same time, the city’s mayor, Muriel Bowser, disputed claims of rising crime, stating on MSNBC that the city is not experiencing a surge in criminal activity. She cited statistics showing a 26% decrease in violent crime and a 7% overall crime reduction over the first seven months of 2025 compared to the previous year.
