Nearly 70% of atomic bomb survivors in Japan fear that nuclear weapons might be used again, Anadolu Agency revealed citing a survey conducted by Kyodo News Agency ahead of the 80th anniversary of the US atomic bombings. The survey, which included around 1,500 survivors, found that 68.6% believe the risk of nuclear weapon use is rising, citing global tensions such as Russia’s war in Ukraine and North Korea’s weapons development.
Additionally, 45.7% of respondents said they “cannot forgive” the US for the bombings, while 24.3% expressed “no special feelings,” and 16.9% were uncertain. This year marks 80 years since the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki near the end of World War II. The bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, killed an estimated 140,000 people, followed by a second bomb on Nagasaki three days later, causing about 70,000 more deaths. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, officially ending World War II.
