A wildfire that began on Monday in the southern French department of Aude has burned 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) and continues to rage on Tuesday, while another fire has ignited near Marseille, Anadolu Agency reported.

Aude Prefect Christian Pouget described the blaze as “exceptional,” highlighting the challenges posed by strong winds and severe drought. Despite deploying over 1,000 firefighters and more than seven Canadair firefighting aircraft, the fire remains difficult to control. Pouget urged residents to stay indoors for their safety.

So far, five firefighters have sustained minor injuries, and five civilians, including a child, have received medical care. Meanwhile, Meteo-France has issued red alerts for three other southern departments due to a “very high danger” of fires along the Mediterranean coast, driven by high temperatures and strong winds. Although winds are expected to ease on Wednesday, the risk of fire will remain elevated.

This wildfire marks the third in Aude within a week, amid an intense early summer heatwave across Europe. The second fire in the Mediterranean Bouches-du-Rhone department burned 30 hectares in two hours. As flames approach Marseille, evacuations are underway in some areas, and residents have been advised to stay indoors. Firefighters warn that the fire is spreading rapidly under unfavorable conditions. Additionally, all flights at Marseille airport have been suspended.
