Flash floods triggered by pre-monsoon rains swept away dozens of tourists in northwest Pakistan’s Swat Valley on Friday, killing at least nine people.
Officials said the nationwide toll from rain-related incidents climbed to 17 over the past 24 hours. Nearly 100 rescuers are searching for missing people along the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Emergency service spokesman Shah Fahad said 16 members of one family were among the dead or missing. Rescuers saved seven people and recovered seven bodies. Footage on social media showed people stranded on a small island in the river, calling for help as floodwaters rose.
Fahad urged tourists to follow government warnings about flash flooding in the popular Swat Valley. Elsewhere, 10 more people died in rain-related incidents in Punjab and Sindh provinces. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow and directed authorities to boost safety near rivers as heavy rains continue this week.
