UN Launches Plan to Combat Global Islamophobia
——————————-
Four weeks after his appointment, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, the United Nations Special Envoy for Combating Islamophobia, has presented a global action plan to tackle rising anti-Muslim hatred, Yabiladi online news agency reported.
Moratinos highlighted that Islamophobia is not confined to Europe or the US but is a worldwide issue affecting the Muslim community of 2.5 billion people.
The plan focuses on education to correct widespread misunderstandings about Islam and the Quran, especially in Western countries. It also calls for strong legal measures to condemn and punish acts of hostility or attacks against Muslims and Islamic institutions.
Moratinos emphasized cooperation with international organizations and countries willing to address this growing problem. The initiative builds on a 2024 UN General Assembly resolution, supported by 115 countries, which called for the appointment of a special envoy to combat Islamophobia.
Moratinos will continue his role as High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations, integrating the new responsibilities to enhance impact. Since 2022, March 15 has been observed as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
