Sweden’s proposed ban on child marriage sparks debate among Muslim communities

The Swedish government, in partnership with the Sweden Democrats party, has introduced a draft law that criminalizes so-called “virginity tests” and tightens restrictions on child and forced marriages, news outlets reported. According to local media outlets, the initiative aims to protect girls, particularly from migrant backgrounds, including Muslim communities.

Under the proposal, failing to report a marriage involving anyone under 18—even by family members or wedding guests—would be punishable by law. The government says the law is part of efforts to combat “honor-based crimes” and promote gender equality. If approved by parliament, the law is set to take effect on December 1, 2025.

However, the announcement has drawn criticism from activists and members of Sweden’s Muslim communities, who argue it ignores cultural and religious contexts and unfairly targets immigrants.

Critics warn the law could increase social division and place legal burdens on individuals attending family events. Swedish authorities insist the law aims to protect the rights and dignity of all residents.
