US Health Secretary to announce ban on artificial food dyes

US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to announce a nationwide ban on certain artificial food dyes, according to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The move targets petroleum-based synthetic dyes used in a wide range of products, including candy, cereals, snacks, and beverages.
The HHS called the ban a step toward improving public health, though no specific timeline has been confirmed. Kennedy is set to provide further details at a news conference on Tuesday.
The decision follows recent FDA action banning Red Dye 3—linked to cancer in animal studies—starting in 2027.
Critics of artificial dyes, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest, argue they pose health risks, particularly for children, and are unnecessary. Several states, including California and West Virginia, have already passed similar bans or restrictions. Supporters say safer, non-petroleum alternatives are already in use in other countries.
