Muslim Community Leaders Rally Against Waqf Bill, Protests Met with Fines

A growing coalition of Muslim leaders, intellectuals, and civil society members has intensified its appeal to Muslim Members of Parliament to unite against the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill, citing it as an infringement on minority rights, Muslim Mirror reported.

The bill, which increases government control over Waqf properties, has triggered widespread concern and disillusionment within the community, with many fearing it undermines the autonomy of Muslim institutions.

The appeal to MPs emphasizes the need for a collective strategy to uphold constitutional values and defend the dignity of the Muslim community. Leaders are urging a joint representation to the President of India, and suggesting bold, peaceful democratic measures, including daily protests and a potential parliamentary boycott, should their appeal be ignored.

Meanwhile, in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, the repercussions of a peaceful protest against the same bill have highlighted the escalating tensions. According to Clarion news agency, Twenty-four Muslim individuals were each fined Rs 2 lakh for participating in a demonstration following Ramadan prayers on March 28. Authorities identified the protesters using CCTV footage.

Community leaders and human rights activists have condemned the harsh penalties, arguing that they violate civil liberties and stifle dissent. They emphasize the right to express concerns about the bill, which they believe reflects a larger agenda against Muslim rights. This situation underscores the growing national concern over the Waqf Amendment Bill and its perceived threat to the Muslim community’s autonomy.
