Punjab Makes Teaching of Holy Quran Compulsory in Schools, Supreme Court Hears Case

A five-member constitutional bench, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard a case on March 20, 2025, regarding a petition to mandate the teaching of the Holy Quran in educational institutions, The International News reported. The federal government and the governments of Punjab and Balochistan submitted their responses, while Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa requested more time.

Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail questioned the need for court intervention, citing ongoing government efforts to introduce Quranic education. Petitioner Aneeq Khattana argued that despite these claims, no official notifications had been issued regarding a consensus-based translation of the Quran.

The Punjab government defended its position by referencing “The Punjab Compulsory Teaching of the Holy Quran Act, 2018,” which mandates Quranic education from Grades I to XII. The court allowed additional time for Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to respond and adjourned the case indefinitely.
