UN Warns of Growing Food Shortages in Sudan’s Zamzam Refugee Camp

The UN has raised alarms about the worsening conditions in Sudan’s Zamzam refugee camp amid intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Anadolu Agency reported. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq reported that the ongoing siege is exacerbating the suffering of displaced civilians, particularly during Ramadan, with food shortages becoming critical.

Prices of basic goods have surged, making essentials unaffordable for most families. Haq noted reports of increasing hunger and armed attacks along the route to El Fasher, as well as concerns about improvised explosive devices within the camp.

In Khartoum, severe malnutrition and critical medicine shortages have been reported, especially among children and pregnant women. The UN calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and unhindered humanitarian access, warning of devastating consequences for millions if swift intervention does not occur. The conflict has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced 14 million since mid-April 2023.
