Iran deports 8,000 undocumented migrants from Semnan province, official says

Iranian authorities deported 8,000 undocumented migrants from Semnan province between March 2024 and March 2025, according to provincial governor Mohammad Javad Kolivand.

Speaking at a meeting on migration management, Kolivand highlighted Iran’s new directive aimed at regulating employment and housing for foreign nationals, emphasizing the importance of a structured work permit system, requiring local authorities to oversee permit issuance and maintain migrant records.

Kolivand also announced a forthcoming directive for migrants holding census identity documents, set to take effect in March 2025. Under the new rules, individuals must complete the registration process as outlined by the Interior Ministry. Those failing to comply will be classified as unauthorized migrants and may face legal consequences.

Currently, Semnan province hosts around 35,000 migrants, with 18,000 holding census registration cards. Authorities are urging eligible individuals to register to avoid penalties.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Semnan ranks second nationwide in migrant population, following Qom, and has over 10,000 foreign-national students enrolled in local schools.
