
The General Company for Railways in Iraq announced that it signed a contract with the Italian company (PTV) to prepare a technical study and preliminary designs for a railway line in the capital, Baghdad. This step aims to enhance the country’s railway infrastructure.
The Director-General of the General Company for Railways, Jabbar Al-Alawi, stated in a press release that “the work is being carried out based on directives from the Prime Minister’s Office to study the rehabilitation of the Basra-Rabia line or identify an alternative, especially with the anticipated start of operations at the Faw Port docks by mid-2025.”
Al-Alawi added that “the General Company for Railways has signed a consultancy contract with the Italian company (PTV) to prepare preliminary designs and a feasibility study for the current railway line, which extends from Basra to Baghdad, then to Mosul, and finally to Rabia. Additionally, the contract includes preparing designs for a new double-track line with the necessary bridges and crossings.”
Regarding the design of future smart trains, Al-Alawi mentioned that “plans are underway to design trains that align with future advancements in human technology,” explaining that “the request has been made for trains capable of meeting transportation needs for the next 50 years, ensuring they comply with European standards to enable travel along the route connecting Iraq to Europe.”
