Record Number of Journalists Killed in 2024
In 2024, at least 124 journalists were killed worldwide, marking the deadliest year on record, Arab News reported citing the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Nearly 70% of these fatalities were attributed to Israeli military actions, particularly during the Israeli-Hamas conflict, which resulted in 85 deaths, predominantly among Palestinian journalists.
This represents a 22% increase in journalist killings compared to 2023, reflecting rising global conflicts and political unrest. The report highlighted that journalists were murdered across 18 countries, with Sudan and Pakistan reporting six deaths each. Mexico, known for its perilous environment for reporters, saw five killings, while Haiti experienced two murders amidst rampant gang violence.
CPJ’s CEO, Jodie Ginsberg, emphasized the unprecedented danger faced by journalists today, noting that 24 of the slain reporters were targeted due to their work. With six journalists already killed in early 2025, the situation remains dire for media workers globally.
