Malaysia Proposes new rules for Muslims attending non-Muslim events, funerals or houses of worship

Updated guidelines regulating Muslim participation in non-Muslim events, funerals, or houses of worship are set to be finalized by Malaysia’s National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) by late February 2025, The Star reported.

Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar stated the revisions aim to prevent actions conflicting with Islamic sensitivities, requiring prior approval from authorities and consultation with Islamic bodies for events involving Muslim attendees. Prohibited activities include distributing religious materials, performances undermining Muslim beliefs, or scheduling events during prayer times, including Fridays.

Venues must avoid proximity to mosques, Muslim cemeteries, or waqf land, and non-Muslim religious symbols are barred. The finalized guidelines will override prior conflicting directives. The MKI Muzakarah Committee will conclude discussions on Feb 25–27.
