UN Condemns Attacks on Civilians in Sudan as Fierce War Over Power Rages On
The United Nations condemned a series of attacks on civilians in Sudan, including a devastating shelling of the Sabreen market in Omdurman that resulted in at least 60 deaths, Arab News reported. UN humanitarian coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami described the attack as “horrific” and “indiscriminate.” Reports indicate that artillery fire from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck the market in an area controlled by the army.
In the capital, Khartoum, an airstrike on an RSF-held region killed two civilians and injured dozens. The ongoing power struggle between Sudan’s army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has intensified, particularly this month.
Nkweta-Salami also highlighted civilian casualties in North Kordofan and Darfur, where the army has reportedly recaptured strategic areas from the RSF. Both factions have faced accusations of targeting civilians. “The suffering of Sudanese civilians has gone on for too long,” Nkweta-Salami stated, urging an end to the conflict.
Fierce fighting in south and west Sudan resulted in the deaths of at least 65 people and wounded more than 130 Monday, medics said, as the devastating war between the army and paramilitary forces rages on.
