Indian American Group highlights rising human rights concerns in India

The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) has released a report detailing a worsening human rights crisis in India in 2024, The Week magazine said.

The Washington-based organization claims that religious freedom and civil rights have continued to deteriorate, citing discriminatory policies, hate crimes, police violence, and repression against minorities, including Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, and Kashmiris.

The report highlights incidents such as police violence against Muslim protesters in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh earlier this year, where law enforcement allegedly opened fire on demonstrators.

It also critiques the introduction of laws like Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code, which forces religious minorities to adhere to common laws on personal matters, and the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which it says erodes control over religious properties.
