India Sees 84% Surge in Communal Riots in 2024

A report titled Hegemony and Demolitions: The Tale of Communal Riots in India in 2024 reveals a staggering 84% increase in communal riots, with 59 incidents recorded in 2024 compared to 32 in 2023, Kashmir Media Service reported.

The study, authored by human rights activists Irfan Engineer, Neha Dabhade, and Mithila Raut, draws on reports from prominent Mumbai newspapers.

Maharashtra reported the highest number of riots at 12, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with seven each. The riots resulted in 13 deaths, predominantly affecting Muslims. Notably, 26 riots occurred during religious festivals, including four coinciding with the Ram temple consecration in Ayodhya.

The report criticizes government actions against Muslims post-riots, including property demolitions and criminal charges against victims. Additionally, 13 mob lynching incidents were documented, leading to 11 deaths. The authors emphasize the need for accountability and effective measures to combat rising communal violence.
