Kenya Muslim Council Establishes Permanent Policy Unit to Strengthen Government Engagement

The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has established a permanent policy liaison directorate to strengthen the Muslim community’s engagement with the government and ensure its priorities are reflected in national development programmes.

The announcement came at the conclusion of the National Muslim Leaders’ Convention in Nairobi, where Muslim scholars, community representatives and delegates from across Kenya’s 47 counties discussed governance, economic development and the community’s participation in national decision-making.

The newly launched Ummatic Policy Liaison Directorate (UPLD) will serve as a permanent link between Muslim institutions and government bodies, including relevant ministries, the National Treasury and the Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat. According to reporting by Kenya’s The Star, the directorate is intended to move engagement beyond a reactive approach towards structured, ongoing cooperation with the executive and legislative branches.

Its responsibilities will include monitoring government commitments, preparing evidence-based policy briefs for Muslim legislators and civil servants, and coordinating relationships with international partners and bilateral donors supporting community development initiatives.

The convention also called for stronger mechanisms to align Muslim community priorities with national economic and development frameworks. The initiative is intended to expand the community’s participation in public policy discussions and improve coordination with state institutions.
