Beirut Book Fair Brings Publishers Together Amid Lebanon’s Economic Crisis

The 67th Beirut Arab International Book Fair opened at the Seaside Arena, bringing together 163 publishing houses for a 10-day programme of literary discussions, cultural events and book-signing sessions amid Lebanon’s continuing economic challenges.

Organised by the Arab Cultural Club in cooperation with the Syndicate of Publishers Union in Lebanon, the fair runs from October 9 to 18 under the patronage of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. This year’s edition brings publishers and cultural institutions together after previous editions of Beirut’s book fairs were held separately, with organisers presenting the unified event as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation across the publishing sector.

The programme features around 90 cultural events, including panel discussions, lectures, literary meetings, poetry and music evenings, and activities for children. Writers, researchers and intellectuals from Lebanon and other Arab countries are participating, while daily book-signing sessions give readers opportunities to meet authors and discover new publications.

The fair also aims to provide a space for literary and intellectual exchange beyond political divisions, reaffirming Beirut’s longstanding role as a centre of Arab cultural life. Among the featured activities are discussions on literature, history, politics, economics and artificial intelligence.

However, the gathering takes place against a difficult economic backdrop for Lebanon’s publishing industry. Publishers continue to face rising production and printing costs, reduced purchasing power among readers and wider financial pressures affecting the production and distribution of books.
