Gaza faces $500 million challenge to clear explosives amid post-ceasefire recovery

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has highlighted the significant challenge of clearing land mines and unexploded ordnance in Gaza following 15 months of conflict.

A report by the Global Protection Cluster estimates that removing explosives from approximately 42 million tonnes of rubble will cost $500 million and take a decade. The rubble also contains hazardous materials such as asbestos, contaminants, and human remains.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has led to over 47,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and displaced nearly the entire population, creating a hunger crisis. A ceasefire, which began on Sunday, has allowed for the release of some hostages and prisoners on both sides.
