Israeli Cabinet Approves Ceasefire Deal with Hamas

The Israeli government has ratified a ceasefire agreement aimed at pausing the 15-month war in Gaza for an initial six weeks, The Guardian reported.

The deal, approved after a cabinet meeting, involves the exchange of 33 hostages held by Hamas for hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli jails. The ceasefire will take effect on Sunday, although questions remain about the hostages’ identities and conditions.

Far-right coalition members threatened to oppose the deal, but it passed with a majority vote. Under the agreement, Hamas will release hostages, including children and elderly men, while Israel will free Palestinian prisoners, some serving life sentences.

The deal also allows for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, with plans for up to 600 trucks daily. Future phases of the agreement will address the release of remaining hostages, the exchange of deceased bodies, and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. The UN Chief and G7 leaders have welcomed the development, emphasizing the need for peace and humanitarian aid.
