US bans Chinese and Russian technology in passenger cars over security concerns

The United States has introduced a ban on the use of Chinese and Russian technology in passenger cars, citing national security risks, news reports said.

The decision, part of broader efforts to limit foreign influence in critical industries, targets both hardware and software from these countries.

The new rule, announced by the outgoing administration, will apply to passenger vehicles under 10,001 pounds and aims to address concerns over potential exploitation of modern car technologies, such as GPS systems, cameras, and internet connectivity, for espionage or interference.

The restrictions will be implemented in two phases: a software ban starting with the 2027 model year and a hardware ban beginning with the 2030 model year.

Plans are underway to extend the ban to commercial vehicles, including buses and trucks. Imports of such technology from China and Russia will also be restricted.
