3.2 Million Sudanese Children Face Acute Malnutrition Crisis

An alarming report by UNICEF reveals that approximately 3.2 million children under five in Sudan are facing acute malnutrition in 2025, Arab News reported. Of these, around 772,000 are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition. The ongoing conflict between the army and paramilitary forces has exacerbated the situation, leading to famine in five regions and threatening additional areas in western Darfur.

Eva Hinds, UNICEF Sudan’s Head of Advocacy, emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian access to prevent further deterioration. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) warns that without immediate intervention, malnutrition rates will continue to rise.

The conflict, now in its 20th month, has resulted in over 12 million people being displaced, marking one of the world’s largest displacement crises. Aid agencies have reported significant challenges in delivering assistance due to bureaucratic obstacles and violence. Meanwhile, the U.S. has labeled the RSF’s actions as genocide, imposing sanctions on its leader.
