China to build world’s largest hydropower dam in Tibet

China has approved plans to construct the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in southern Tibet, state media reported Wednesday.

The dam is expected to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours annually, three times the output of the Three Gorges Dam, currently the largest in the world.

The project will cost over 1 trillion yuan ($137 billion), making it the most expensive infrastructure project globally.

State media highlighted its significance for China’s carbon neutrality goals and global climate change efforts. The Yarlung Tsangpo flows into India and Bangladesh, where it is known as the Brahmaputra River.
