Bangladesh Interim Leader Promises Justice for Student Protest Victims

Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader of Bangladesh, has pledged to seek justice for approximately 1,500 individuals killed during student protests in July 2024, Khaama Press reported yesterday.

Speaking on the 100th day of his administration, Yunus highlighted the ongoing investigation into the casualties and committed to holding accountable those responsible for the violence.

The protests erupted over government job quota disputes, leading to widespread unrest and the eventual ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5. A special court has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and 45 others, accusing them of “crimes against humanity.”

Yunus emphasized his government’s dedication to extraditing Hasina and pursuing legal action against past officials for human rights violations.
