Civil Group Calls for Accountability from China Over Human Rights Violations in Xinjiang
The International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) has urged for stronger action to hold China accountable for serious human rights violations in Xinjiang, Jurist News reported yesterday.
The ISHR calls on the Chinese government to implement recommendations from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and allow investigations in the region.
In its August 2022 report, the OHCHR highlighted that China’s anti-terrorism laws impose discriminatory restrictions on Uyghurs, violating their rights to religious identity, privacy, and movement. Allegations of enforced disappearances and re-education of Uyghurs have surged since 2017.
China has consistently denied these allegations, framing them as interference in its internal affairs. ISHR’s China program manager, Raphaël Viana David, criticized the double standards of states that support China’s actions while condemning human rights abuses elsewhere. A coalition of countries, the “Xinjiang Core Group,” recently called for the release of arbitrarily detained individuals and clarification on the fate of missing persons in Xinjiang.
