Iraq Elected to Chair G77 and China in 2025

Iraq has been elected to chair the Group of 77 (G77) and China at the United Nations in 2025, marking the first time in 60 years that the country will hold this position, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The decision was unanimously adopted during a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group at UN headquarters in New York, where Iraq’s nomination was discussed.

Abbas Kadhom Obaid, Iraq’s charge d’affaires at the UN, emphasized that as chair, Iraq will prioritize the goals of developing countries in economic, technological, and social development. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to the fundamental principles of the G77 and China, vowing to ensure the success of its chairmanship.

Established in 1964, the G77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries within the UN. Originally comprised of 77 founding members, its membership has since expanded to 134 nations, reflecting its growing influence on global issues.
