Bangladesh’s army chief to form interim government’ after Hasina resigns

Bangladesh’s army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, declared plans to form an interim government following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid escalating protests, Arab News reported today.

“The country has suffered a lot… it is time to stop the violence,” he stated in a televised address. Waker emphasized his commitment to restoring order, urging citizens, especially students, to remain calm and assist in the transition.

Protests erupted over civil service job quotas, leading to violent clashes that have resulted in at least 300 deaths since early July. Waker noted, “We will prosecute all murders,” as he prepares to consult with the president and opposition parties to establish the interim government.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned.

As protests intensified, internet access was restricted, and security forces enforced curfews.
