Following years of military conflicts, mass graves found in Mali

Around 60 bodies have been found in the Kidal region of northern Mali, with some gathered in mass graves and others scattered as human remains among tree trunks and surrounding bushland.

The horrific scene in Abeïbara, Kidal Region, reveals the extent of the atrocities unleashed in the area. The exact cause of death for these individuals is unknown, but observers believe they are victims of terrorism in the region.

In addition to the ongoing clashes between the military and extremist groups still present in some areas, local sources confirmed that the bodies found might be of civilians killed in acts of revenge.

According to local witnesses, the bodies were discovered across a 40-kilometer stretch around Abeïbara, specifically in the villages of Agli, Amjelal, Hidagos, Akomas, and Ozen.

Despite the Malian army clearing most of the Kidal region of terrorists in November 2023, small pockets of extremist groups remain, contributing to ongoing unrest and attacks.

Although a peace agreement was signed in 2015 between the central government and armed groups, the calm did not last long. Violence and terrorism soon returned, reigniting conflicts in the region.

With the military council assuming power in recent years, clashes have intensified again, leading to repeated tragedies, violence, and terrorism in an area still suffering from security and political tensions.
