UN disarmament head calls for combating illegal trade of small arms

Nakamitsu Izumi, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, has highlighted the importance of a declaration unanimously adopted by a panel on the illegal trade of small arms and light weapons.

In a press release on Tuesday, Izumi described it as a politically significant achievement, especially considering the current challenging multilateral environment and specific security issues.

The document includes measures such as forming a group of experts to analyze new manufacturing methods for small arms using 3D-printing technology and to prevent their illegal use.

The fourth United Nations Conference to Review Progress on Preventing, Combating, and Eradicating the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons was held in New York from June 17 to 28. This panel convenes every six years to create an action plan for UN members.
