Law Minister Assures Action on Judicial Vacancies, Uniform Civil Code

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has stated that the implementation of a uniform civil code remains on the government’s agenda, Muslim Mirror reported yesterday.

Meghwal, who recently assumed charge as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Law and Justice, also said a solution will be found on the long-pending finalization of the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) – a set of guidelines for the appointment, elevation and transfer of higher court judges.

Addressing the issue of mounting vacancies in the judiciary, Meghwal said they will work to fill the over 345 vacant positions in high courts, as well as the two vacancies in the Supreme Court, at the earliest.

It should be mentioned that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India is a proposed legal framework that aims to replace the personal laws, which are specific to various religions, with a common set of laws governing every citizen. These personal laws cover areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance.
