Chinese Police detain over 1,000 Tibetans protesting Chinese dam project

Police in southwestern China’s Sichuan province arrested over 1,000 Tibetans, including monks, who protested the construction of a dam that would destroy six monasteries and force the relocation of two villages, RFA reported.

The arrested individuals are being held in various places and have been forced to bring their own food and bedding, the article added.

According to local reports, Chinese authorities deployed armed police to arrest monks and local residents, leading to injuries and hospital admissions.

The dam is part of a massive hydropower complex on the Drichu River, causing distress among local Tibetans.

Tibetans in exile have been holding demonstrations, and the International Campaign for Tibet condemned Beijing’s policies in Tibet.
