Floods in Yemen Kill 30, Affect Nearly 12,000 Families

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) announced on Tuesday that at least 30 people have been killed and nearly 12,000 families affected by floods and heavy rains in Yemen since March.
In a statement published on its website, the IFRC said the rainy season began earlier than usual this year, with light rainfall first recorded on March 20.
The organization noted that since March 27, rainfall has intensified significantly, triggering severe flooding across the country and impacting more than 10 of Yemen’s 22 governorates. The affected areas include Taiz, Al Jawf, Ibb, Abyan, Al Bayda, Lahj, Marib, Al Hudaydah, Hadramawt, Aden, and Ad Dali’.
Citing the Yemeni Red Crescent Society, the statement said the floods have affected around 83,713 people from approximately 11,959 families. Many of those impacted are living in camps for internally displaced persons or in flood-prone areas.
The IFRC added that the disaster has caused at least 30 deaths and 47 injuries, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Yemen’s fragile infrastructure has worsened the impact of the floods, compounding the suffering of a population already facing deteriorating basic services amid an ongoing conflict that has lasted for more than a decade.
