Yemen Faces Economic Collapse, Humanitarian Crisis, Warns Oxfam

A decade after the Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen, the country is experiencing severe economic decline and a humanitarian crisis, according to Oxfam, Reliefweb.com reported. Competing financial policies between the North and South have led to the Yemeni rial depreciating over 90%, making basic necessities unaffordable for many. In February alone, the rial lost 30% of its value.

The Houthis in the North have hindered humanitarian efforts, detaining aid workers and creating a dangerous environment for assistance. This has resulted in millions lacking access to food, water, and healthcare. Education and health services have been devastated, with only 40% of health facilities operational.

Oxfam’s Head of Humanitarian Advocacy, Pauline Chetcuti, emphasized the urgent need for international action to support Yemenis in crisis. The ongoing conflict has killed over 19,000 people and displaced nearly five million, disproportionately affecting women and children. A genuine peace process is essential for Yemen’s recovery.
