Court Ruling, World Cup Concerns Renew US Immigration Debate

Court Ruling, World Cup Concerns Renew US Immigration Debate
————————————
A US federal judge has struck down key Trump administration immigration policies that had stalled decisions on asylum, work permits, green cards and citizenship applications for immigrants from 39 countries, offering new hope to thousands of people whose cases had been left in legal uncertainty.

The ruling found that the policies unlawfully restricted immigration processing based on national origin and had left applicants in limbo for months despite their compliance with legal procedures.

The decision comes as immigration enforcement faces renewed scrutiny ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In New York City, Muslim Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized federal plans to expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, saying immigrants are essential to the city and to football itself, as players, workers and fans.

The debate has intensified after federal officials threatened a major increase in ICE agents in New York. Immigrant rights advocates warn that stricter enforcement could spread fear among migrant communities during a global sporting event expected to draw millions of visitors.
