More Young Men Stay With Parents as Solo Living Rises Among UK Elderly

New figures from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that over a third of men aged 20 to 34 are living with their parents, compared to just over a fifth of women in the same age group. The data reveals that 3.6 million young adults now live with their parents, up 10% from 2014.

The ONS attributes the trend to young people reaching life milestones later, driven in part by rising housing costs. Meanwhile, the number of people living alone in the UK has reached 8.4 million—an 11% increase over the past decade.

This growth is largely due to a rise in older adults, especially women over 65, living alone. In 2024, half of all individuals living alone were aged 65 or older. The data also noted a rise in single fathers and a decline in marriage rates.
