UN expert: Gaza is world’s most dangerous place for journalists, with more than 200 Palestinian journalists killed

A United Nations expert on freedom of expression has warned that the Gaza Strip has become the most dangerous environment in the world for journalists, citing the killing of more than 200 Palestinian journalists since the start of the Israeli offensive on October 7, 2023.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression said journalists in Gaza face extreme risks while documenting events on the ground, amid ongoing attacks and restrictions on independent media coverage.

The expert also highlighted restrictions preventing foreign journalists from entering the Palestinian territories, particularly Gaza, saying such measures limit international media access and hinder independent reporting on the situation.

He further warned that obstacles facing UN teams responsible for documenting violations and collecting evidence could affect efforts to establish independent records and investigate alleged abuses.

Palestinian journalists in Gaza continue to work under severe security and humanitarian conditions, facing threats from bombardments, displacement, loss of family members, and damage to media facilities and equipment.

The UN official called for stronger international mechanisms to protect journalists, enhance documentation efforts, and ensure effective investigations into violations against media workers.
