Sadiq Khan Illuminates London’s West End with Ramadan Lights, Promoting Unity and Hope

London’s West End was lit up Friday evening as Mayor Sadiq Khan switched on the city’s annual Ramadan lights for the fourth consecutive year, using the event to emphasize unity, inclusion, and hope, IQNA reported.
Speaking on Coventry Street, Khan described the display—now in its fourth year—as a “beacon of togetherness,” sending a message to Muslim communities that they are valued while celebrating the holy month with all Londoners. Over 30,000 LED lights inspired by Islamic geometric patterns now adorn Leicester Square and surrounding streets, displaying “Happy Ramadan” until March 18, when the message changes to “Happy Eid.” The initiative is organized and funded by the Aziz Foundation.
Khan called for solidarity amid rising political tensions and Islamophobia, urging Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Sikhs, and non-religious residents alike to come together during Ramadan. He encouraged worshippers to remember those suffering in Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, while condemning efforts that “sow division, hatred, and fear.”
“London is the antidote to that hatred,” he said, describing the city as “a beacon of hope, unity, and inclusivity,” where diversity is celebrated and everyone is valued.
