Pakistani police said on Saturday that a suicide bombing targeting a wedding near the Afghan border has killed seven people, marking the latest attack in a surge of violence in the country.

According to reports seen by Shia Waves Agency, police official Mohammad Adnan said the explosion occurred in the evening inside a building hosting members of a local “peace committee” during a wedding ceremony in the Dera Ismail Khan area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan.

Adnan said that four of the roughly 12 people injured in the attack later died of their wounds in hospital, raising the death toll to seven. Three people were confirmed dead at the scene of the blast on Friday.

Peace committees are local groups made up of residents and tribal elders and are supported by the government as part of efforts to counter militant groups in areas along the border with Afghanistan.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, the Pakistani Taliban, which operates on both sides of the Afghan border, has previously labeled members of peace committees as “traitors” for cooperating with the authorities.

Islamabad has accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani Taliban to use Afghan territory to plan and carry out attacks, an allegation Kabul denies, saying such attacks are an internal matter for Pakistan.
