Glasgow Approves Expansion of Mosque and Community Centre in Crosshill
————————
Glasgow City Council has formally approved plans to expand a mosque and educational community centre in the Crosshill area of Scotland, a move aimed at improving facilities and enhancing services for worshippers while strengthening the centre’s long-term role in the local community.
According to Glasgow Live, the Al-Farooq Islamic Educational and Community Centre, located on Dixon Avenue in Crosshill, submitted a planning application in response to growing demand from mosque attendees and centre users.
The council’s planning committee granted final approval for the proposal, allowing the construction of a new single-storey extension as part of the mosque’s development project. The extension will include dedicated ablution facilities, intended to meet increasing needs and support the centre’s sustainability in the years ahead.
Project leaders said the expansion will be carried out to high design standards, using quality materials while respecting the historic character of the surrounding urban area. They added that the new structure will be architecturally compatible with the existing building and its neighborhood.
The proposal received strong community backing, with around 350 mosque users signing a petition in support. City planners said the extension represents an appropriate addition to the existing building and will not significantly alter its current use.
Parking arrangements were also discussed during the planning meeting, with officials noting that the project does not involve a change of use. The provision of potential bicycle parking was suggested to encourage worshippers to walk or cycle to the site.
The council ultimately endorsed the planners’ recommendation, clearing the way for the Al-Farooq Islamic Educational and Community Centre to proceed with the expansion while maintaining its religious and community functions for local residents.
