UAE-Backed Southern Transitional Council Takes Control of Yemen’s Al-Mahrah Province

Al-Mahrah province in eastern Yemen, bordering Oman, has come under the control of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), often described as UAE-backed, early Thursday morning. According to regional media reports viewed by Shia Waves Agency, the takeover occurred without armed conflict, following an agreement with local military commanders who handed over security posts, military bases, and key infrastructure.
The handover reportedly included the provincial capital Al-Ghaydah, the main port of Nishtun, the 137th Infantry Brigade, and other strategic sites. STC forces raised their flag over state institutions, signaling consolidation of authority.
Observers say the takeover represents a significant expansion of STC influence in eastern Yemen, coinciding with broader STC operations in nearby provinces such as Hadramaut. Satellite images and local reporting suggest the STC now controls critical entry points and infrastructure, including borders and ports.
While regional and local outlets report the handover as peaceful, independent confirmation from major international news agencies remains limited. Experts caution that the situation in Al-Mahrah remains fluid, and the long-term governance, public services, and security arrangements under STC control are yet to be determined.
