UK to Enforce Stricter English Language Rules for Migrants from 2026

Britain will introduce tougher English language requirements for migrants and asylum seekers starting January 2026, as part of wider immigration reforms, Khaama Press reported. The Home Office said applicants will need to demonstrate B2-level proficiency—an upper-intermediate standard—in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

The new rule, effective January 8, raises the requirement from the current B1 level and is intended to strengthen integration and reduce annual migration by an estimated 6,000 people. Authorities said the reform also aligns with stricter entry conditions for skilled workers and adult dependents.

The policy follows growing public pressure over immigration and an increase in small boat crossings across the English Channel. Officials said the change reflects the government’s effort to ensure newcomers can live and work independently in English-speaking environments.

Experts noted that while the move could improve integration, it may also limit opportunities for refugees and low-income migrants. The measure is seen as part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s strategy to demonstrate tighter control over migration ahead of future elections.
