The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) has called on prosecutors to file hate crime charges against a 27-year-old Garden City man accused of making violent threats toward participants of the annual Arbaeen procession in Dearborn, media outlets reported. Authorities said the suspect was arrested Saturday, just hours before the religious gathering at the Karbala Islamic Educational Center.

Arbaeen, a major Shia Muslim observance, commemorates the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Husain (peace be upon him), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid urged prosecutors to apply Michigan’s Ethnic Intimidation statute, stressing that citizens should not face threats or intimidation because of their faith.

He also noted that the Karbala center has previously been targeted by threats and vandalism. The arrest comes amid growing concerns over Islamophobic incidents across the U.S., with advocacy groups warning of an increase in threats and attacks against Muslim communities.
