UN Commision: War crimes likely committed by both sides in Syria sectarian violence
————————————
A UN investigative team has found that war crimes were likely committed by both interim government forces and fighters loyal to Syria’s former regime during a significant outbreak of sectarian violence in Syria’s coastal areas, which culminated in a series of massacres in March, Arab News reported.

According to the UN Syria Commission of Inquiry’s report released Thursday, approximately 1,400 people—mostly civilians—were killed during the violence, which predominantly targeted Alawi communities. The report also notes that violations continue to be reported. This wave of violence in the coastal region represents the deadliest unrest in Syria since the overthrow of President Bashar Assad last year, leading the interim government to establish a fact-finding committee.
