UN: Afghan Citizens Rank as Second Largest Group of Illegal Refugees
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Afghan citizens have emerged as the second largest group of illegal refugees entering Greece, following Syrians, Khaama Press reported. In 2024, a total of 54,417 individuals arrived in Greece by sea, with 26% being Afghans. The breakdown of arrivals included 35% Syrians, 12% Egyptians, 4% Palestinians, and 4% Eritreans.
The UNHCR reported a 27% increase in migrant arrivals compared to the previous year, highlighting the ongoing migration crisis. Among these refugees, 16% were women, 28% were children, and 56% were men. This trend underscores the perilous journeys undertaken by many, as thousands risk their lives in search of safety and better living conditions in Europe.
Greece continues to be a primary entry point for migrants fleeing conflict and instability, particularly from Afghanistan and Syria. Tragically, many refugees have lost their lives during these treacherous journeys. The UNHCR emphasizes the need for international support and action to address the root causes of migration, including ongoing conflict and insecurity, to mitigate the growing crisis and provide essential assistance to those affected.
