Denmark donates $2.8M to aid Afghanistan amid hunger crisis

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced Tuesday that Denmark has contributed $2.8 million to the U.N. Humanitarian Fund for Afghanistan to support ongoing relief efforts, Afghan Amu news agency reported.

The donation comes as Afghanistan grapples with a severe hunger crisis, with the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) estimating that nearly 15 million people face crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity this winter.

The WFP has started delivering food to remote areas cut off by snow and ice but warns that a severe funding shortfall is hampering operations. The organization reports that over three-quarters of Afghanistan’s population cannot afford a nutritious diet, increasing the risk of malnutrition.
