German Report Warns of Rising Far-Right Influence in Football Stadiums

A German media report and recent studies have warned of growing activity by far-right and neo-Nazi groups inside football stadiums, especially among supporters of third- and fourth-division clubs.

According to the report, far-right presence in German stadiums dates back to the 1970s, when hooligan culture spread from Britain to Germany. Since then, extremist nationalist groups have used football terraces as spaces to gather, display strength, and promote anti-migrant and xenophobic views.

A study by Germany’s Federal Agency for Civic Education said far-right symbols, racist slogans, Nazi imagery, anti-immigrant chants, and verbal or physical attacks have become more visible among some fan groups.

The report said the phenomenon intensified after German reunification in 1990, particularly in eastern states affected by unemployment and economic hardship. Despite anti-racism programs by clubs and football authorities, far-right activity reportedly increased again after the 2015 refugee crisis and the rise of the Alternative for Germany party.

Recent reports say extremist groups are focusing on lower-division clubs, while security officials warn that football is being used to normalize far-right ideology and spread it among young fans.
