Muslim children finally allowed to be circumcised in Italian hospitals
Yesterday, the health advisor for the Lazio region in central Italy, Alesso D’Amato, signed a decision allowing Muslim families in the region to perform circumcisions for their male children in the health facilities of the Italian Ministry of Health, and by doctors specializing in pediatric surgery.
The decision came after years of claims and negotiations by the Doctors’ Syndicate of foreign origin in Italy and the Arab World Community, which are headed by Professor Fouad Odeh, a doctor of Arab origins.
The issue of circumcision of children of Muslim origins in Italy was one of the most controversial issues, as Italy did not recognize circumcision as a religious ritual for Muslims due to the lack of recognition of the Islamic religion in Italy among the religious beliefs recognized there.
The decision of the Italian Ministry of Health to allow families of Muslim origins to perform circumcisions for their children in Italian health facilities without any costs came to resolve an issue that has long occupied the children of Muslim communities in Italy, whose members reach nearly 4 million.
