Severe Winter Weather Disrupts Travel and Claims Lives Across Europe
……….
At least six people have died as heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures continue to disrupt large parts of Europe, causing widespread travel chaos and safety concerns, according to reports from authorities and witnesses, The Guardian reported. Emergency services across several countries responded to weather-related accidents and infrastructure disruptions.
In France, three people were killed and 15 injured in road accidents in the Landes region of the southwest, while two further deaths were reported in the Paris area. One driver died after plunging into the Marne River, and another was killed in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle. Snow also forced major flight cancellations at Paris airports.
Elsewhere, a woman in Sarajevo died after a snow-laden tree branch fell on her, as heavy snowfall blanketed Bosnia and Herzegovina. Airports in the Netherlands cancelled hundreds of flights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, while rail travel was disrupted by a separate IT outage, compounding weather-related delays and cancellations across the country.
Freezing temperatures spread across central and northern Europe. Germany recorded temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius, with heavy snowfall forecast later in the week. In Britain, temperatures dropped to minus 12.5 degrees, closing schools and disrupting road, rail and air travel across northern regions.
In Italy, sub-zero temperatures affected northern lowlands, while central and southern areas faced heavy rain and strong winds. Rising water levels in Rome’s Tiber River prompted safety restrictions. Severe weather also impacted the Balkans and Adriatic coast, causing flooding, power outages and emergency measures in parts of Serbia and Croatia.
