Two churches in Cambridgeshire, located in Soham and St Andrew’s in Chesterton, commemorated the prominent 18th-century abolitionist Olaudah Equiano as part of Black History Month.
Equiano was kidnapped from his home in Nigeria as a child and sold into slavery. After eventually purchasing his own freedom, he published his influential memoirs, sharing his experiences of life in bondage and his fight for liberty with a global audience.
According to the BBC, a play based on his life was performed for students during the commemoration to narrate his journey of resistance against oppression and his lifelong pursuit of social justice. Equiano remains a powerful symbol of the effort to abolish slavery and advance human rights in Britain.
